Today I have a cloud over me. A woman whose breast cancer blog I follow has died – less than a year after receiving her diagnosis.

She was much younger than me and has had a much tougher journey.

I found this poem on another blog.

Today I heard that a colleague died in a road traffic accident last week. He was due to retire this week.

When we last spoke in December he told me about his plans to maximise his pension for his future. ┬áI chose not to tell him about my breast cancer, nor how it forces me to consider my mortality. ┬áInstead I wished him health to enjoy his retirement – he looked surprised.

And I am disturbed.

Disturb us, O Lord, when
We are too pleased with ourselves;
When our dreams have come true,
Because we dreamed too little.
We arrived safely,
Because we sailed too close to shore.
Disturb us, O Lord, when
With the abundance of things we possess,
We have lost our thirst
For the waters of life;
Having fallen in love with life,
We have ceased to dream of eternity.
And in our efforts to build a new earth,
We have allowed our vision
Of the new Heaven to dim.
Disturb us, O Lord, to dare more boldly,
To venture on wilder seas
Where storms will show Your mastery;
Where losing sight of land,
We shall find the stars.
We ask You to push back
The horizons of our hopes;
And to push us into the future
In strength, courage, hope, and love.
We ask in the name of our Captain,
Who is Jesus.

Disturb us, Oh Lord – Sir Francis Drake’s Prayer
